On August 4, 2026, American Public University System combined with Rasmussen University and Hondros College of Nursing to form a single higher education institution. American Public University System (the System) now includes American Public University, American Military University, Rasmussen University, and Hondros College of Nursing. The System is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Public Education, Inc. (APEI). Ask for the Support You Need
Accommodations can be requested at any time.
Requesting accommodations early can help your academic journey as it gives appropriate time for academic adjustments to be applied.
As a post-secondary student, you are not required to self-disclose disabilities. However, we encourage you to do so to help ensure you are getting the resources needed.
How to Request Accommodations
-
Step 1: Requesting Accommodations
To begin the interactive accommodations process:
- Click on the “Apply for Accommodations” button below.
- Log into the Student Account Center.
- Complete the Student Request for Accommodations Form. If you have questions, click the “Assistance on Applying for Accommodations” button.
- After you submit the Student Request for Accommodations Form, an "AD Accommodations Qualified Professional Document" item will be added to your Document Center in your Account Center. Upload one or more of the following supporting documents to the AD Accommodations Qualified Professional Document:
- Qualified Professional Form – This form must be completed in its entirety by your qualified healthcare provider. To ensure the information accurately reflects the provider's assessment, students should not complete any portion of the form before giving it to their provider. Incomplete or student-completed forms may delay the review of your request.
- Provider Letter – A letter from your healthcare provider on official letterhead that outlines your diagnosed disability, describes the functional limitations, and any recommended accommodations. The letter must be signed by the provider with either a handwritten (wet) signature or a verifiable electronic signature.
- IEP or Section 504 Plan – Submit the entire IEP or Section 504 Plan from high school. Transition plans, exit summaries, or other partial documents generally do not provide enough information to evaluate an accommodations request.
Prospective Students: If you have not yet received access to the Student Account Center and Document Center, please contact your Admissions Representative to begin the accommodations process. Your Admissions Representative will coordinate with the Office of Student Affairs to provide you with the appropriate forms and information. Once you have access to your Student Account Center, you may use the process outlined below to submit your request.
-
Step 2: Initial Intake by an Accommodations Officer
- An Accommodations Officer will review your submitted request and supporting documentation for completeness and clarity.
- If more information, clarification, or documentation is needed, an Accommodations Officer will contact you.
- Once the intake is complete, the Accommodations Officer will forward your request and supporting documentation to the Accommodations Committee for review.
-
Step 3: Accommodations Committee
- The Accommodations Committee will review your request within 2–3 weeks after receiving your completed intake packet.
- The Committee will determine your eligibility and identify reasonable accommodations based on your request, supporting documentation, and applicable law.
- If additional information is needed to complete the review, the Committee or an Accommodations Officer may contact you or your qualified professional (if you have provided the appropriate HIPAA/FERPA authorization).
- If your accommodations are approved, you will receive an email with your Accommodations Plan and instructions for activating and implementing your approved accommodations. For students attending courses at a campus location, the Campus Accommodations Liaison will also be included on the approval email to support the implementation of approved accommodations. If you have questions regarding your approved accommodations, please contact an Accommodations Officer.
- If your requested accommodations are denied, an Accommodations Officer will contact you to explain the decision and discuss any next steps.
-
Step 4: Activating & Implementing Accommodations
- At the beginning of each quarter/term, email a copy of your approved Accommodations Plan to each of your instructors. Accommodations are not automatically applied each term.
- If you have approved residential accommodations, you must also provide your Residential Verification Document (RVD) to each instructor along with your Accommodations Plan.
- Meet with each instructor as early as possible to discuss how your approved accommodations will be implemented in each course. This conversation helps ensure your accommodations are provided appropriately and in a timely manner.
- Do not wait until the last minute to notify your instructors. They need reasonable time to implement approved accommodations. Accommodations are not retroactive.
- Contact an Accommodations Officer if you have questions or experience difficulty implementing your approved accommodations. If you attend courses at a campus location, your Campus Accommodations Liaison is also available to assist with implementing your approved accommodations and addressing questions or concerns that arise during the quarter/term.

Additional Accommodations
If you feel you need additional accommodations, please reach out to an Accommodations Officer to discuss your options. If it is determined that you should request additional accommodations, you’ll use the following steps:
- Log into the Student Account Center.
- Complete the Accommodations Additional Request Form.
- This request could require additional documentation from a qualified professional. If this is required, an Accommodations Officer will contact you. If so, one of the following documents will need to be submitted:
-
Accommodations Renewal
Accommodations generally last one year. On your Plan, you will see your specific dates. Close to that one year date, you’ll receive an email reminder alerting you to complete the required paperwork for renewal, if you wish to renew. If you have not received your renewal paperwork two weeks prior to your expiration date, please contact an Accommodations Officer.

Issues with Approved Accommodations
Students who are having troubles with their approved accommodations should follow this process.
Step 1: If you are having trouble accessing your accommodations, meet with your instructor and share your concern. Share your ideas for addressing the concern and work with the instructor to put the accommodations in place.
Step 2: If the actions taken in Step 1 do not adequately meet your needs, make an appointment with an Accommodations Officer to resolve your concern.
Step 3: If your concerns are not resolved through these steps, you may choose to use the disability grievance procedure.
