Rasmussen College Graduate Helps Other Students Succeed

Like many students, Joshua Erickson went to college with the expectation of receiving a job offer after graduation. With an Associate of Applied Science degree from a college in North Dakota, Erickson thought he was ready for the real world, but he quickly learned the real world wasn’t ready for him.

“It was very frustrating,” said Erickson, Rasmussen College School of Business graduate. “I couldn’t find a job, didn’t have any help at my school, and I realized in this tough economy, I needed more than an Associate’s degree.” With no job, Erickson decided to move back home to Central Wisconsin and go back to school.

“From the moment I walked into the Rasmussen College Wausau campus, I knew this was the place for me,” said Erickson. “Instead of telling me I need this, this, and this like other colleges I visited, the program manager asked me what I wanted and how he could help me.” Erickson decided to go to school full time and earn his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Erickson took a busy 108 credits in just 14 months. At the same time, he took part in the work/study program at Rasmussen College where he tutored students in accounting, math, and general studies.

“I treated school like a 12-hour day job,” said Erickson. “I cut out a few things in my personal life, like exercising and other activities I love to do to make more time to study. No matter how difficult classes seemed to be, I always envisioned being in a position like I am in now to help push me through those long days of classes and studying.” After graduating in September, 2011, Erickson applied for the Administrative Assistant position at the Rasmussen College Wausau campus and got it.

“It’s been such a great experience,” said Erickson. “The best part is being able to provide a positive and fun environment for our students.” Erickson is now working even closer with students. He just accepted the student advisor position at Rasmussen College where he is helping other students succeed in their new careers, just like he did.

“Hard works pays off,” said Erickson. “I see that now in myself. I’ve worked very hard, and I continue to work hard.” Erickson isn’t done learning yet. He’s currently earning his Master’s degree from Benedictine University. He has this advice for those considering going back to school.

“You need to set a goal, be patient, and be persistent,” said Erickson. “Never give up.”
