No matter what your reason for leaving was, re-entering the workforce after a long hiatus can be difficult, especially in a rough economy. However, as long as you update your skills,reinvent your resume, and obtain the skills and tools you need to succeed through a college degree, you shouldn't have to worry about your chances of finding a new job.

Updating Your Resume

Employers are often wary of hiring people with large gaps in their resume, so try to fill in the empty spaces with new experiences or skills.

1. If possible, look for industry-related opportunities to get involved in before you start looking for a new job. An internship or volunteer service will strengthen your resume and let potential employers know that you're still active.

2. Brush up on your computer skills. The rapid advancement of technology means there are always new programs out there, so familiarize yourself with recent innovations by taking a class or exploring on your own.

3. When writing your CV, focus on your achievements rather than the precise dates of past jobs.

4. Post your work history online. You'll get noticed by more employers in the industry you're looking to enter and may even be contacted about opportunities before you apply.

Updating Your Skills

If you have a high school diploma, consider entering a degree program to increase your job prospects. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 73 percent of adults with a Bachelor's degree or higher were employed in July 2011, compared to 54.9 percent of those with only a high school degree.

1. Consider taking a part-time job that you can maintain while working on a degree. An online program will provide flexibility, giving you time to incorporate school and a job into your schedule.

2. Pursue a plan of study that will prepare you for your career. If you're not exactly sure what you want to do, find a program that could take you in multiple directions, like a Business Administration degree or a Computer Science degree.

3. If you already have a higher degree, consider a certificate program, so you can update your knowledge in a specialized area.

When reentering the workforce, you may have to reinvent yourself a little and be open to new experiences and opportunities. With an impressive resume and education, you will go far in your career search.
