
As I reflect on the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, I have become increasingly aware of the unique role nurses play in patient care and why nursing will continue to thrive despite technological advancements.
While AI has the potential to improve efficiency, support clinical decision-making, and streamline documentation, it cannot replace the human connection, critical thinking, compassion and advocacy that define the nursing profession.
The evolution of healthcare technology can feel intimidating for many nurses.
Questions about automation, AI-assisted charting, and predictive analytics often lead healthcare professionals to wonder how their roles may change in the future.
However, through examining workforce trends, nursing responsibilities, and patient-centered care, I have gained confidence that nursing is a profession built on uniquely human qualities that technology cannot replicate.
Here’s what artificial intelligence can and can’t do in nursing.
1. AI helps nurses manage reminders and follow-up care
AI can streamline clinical workflows by identifying tasks that require attention and prompting clinicians at appropriate times.
These systems analyze patient data, treatment plans, and organizational protocols to support timely care delivery and improve adherence to evidence-based practices.
For example, a hospital-based AI system might recognize that a patient with a urinary catheter has had the device in place longer than recommended. The system could automatically notify the nurse and provider to evaluate whether the catheter is still necessary, helping reduce infection risk.
Another application involves medication administration and monitoring.
If a patient is due for a time-sensitive medication or required laboratory monitoring has not been completed, AI can generate alerts for the care team.1
In long-term care settings, AI may identify residents who are overdue for assessments, vaccinations, care plan reviews, or other preventive services, helping clinicians prioritize necessary interventions.
For NPs and outpatient providers, AI can automate follow-up reminders for patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, identify patients who are overdue for preventive screenings, and help prioritize outreach based on clinical risk factors. These capabilities can support population health management and improve continuity of care.
2. AI can cross reference patient data with clinical databases
AI systems used in healthcare do not typically "look up" patient information the way a person would search the internet. Instead, they analyze data that already exists within a healthcare organization's protected electronic health record (EHR) system, such as vital signs, laboratory values, medications, diagnoses, and documented assessments.
The AI identifies patterns, compares current findings to historical data, and alerts clinicians to potential concerns or recommended actions.
Patient privacy remains a critical requirement. Patient data security and privacy are big concerns for healthcare systems, patients and nurses alike when we talk about AI integration.
Healthcare organizations must comply with HIPAA and other privacy regulations, and reputable AI tools are designed to operate within secure healthcare systems.
In most cases, data are encrypted, access is limited to authorized users, and clinicians maintain responsibility for reviewing and approving AI-generated recommendations. Concerns over these risks and the safeguards are a high priority in building and implementing any AI tool.
3. AI can identify trends and predict potential health risks
For example, a bedside nurse may notice that a patient's temperature has increased slightly and that the heart rate is somewhat elevated, but neither finding alone appears alarming.
An AI system, however, can compare these changes against hundreds of other data points and recognize a pattern associated with early sepsis.
It may detect that the patient's respiratory rate has been gradually increasing over several hours, blood pressure has begun trending downward, and laboratory results suggest an inflammatory response. Based on these combined indicators, the system can generate an alert notifying the healthcare team that the patient may be at increased risk for sepsis.
This early warning allows nurses and providers to assess the patient sooner, order additional diagnostic tests, initiate sepsis screening protocols, obtain blood cultures, administer intravenous fluids, or begin antibiotic therapy if appropriate.
Research has shown that earlier recognition and treatment of sepsis are associated with improved outcomes, reduced complications, shorter hospital stays, and lower mortality rates.2
4. AI can document patient interactions
One of the most promising applications of AI is reducing documentation burden.
Many healthcare organizations are implementing "ambient AI" documentation tools, often referred to as AI scribes.
These systems listen to clinical conversations, transcribe them, and generate draft documentation that clinicians review and edit before it becomes part of the medical record.3
For a bedside nurse in a hospital, an AI documentation tool could listen during shift assessments and generate a draft note that includes assessment findings, patient concerns, and interventions performed.
Rather than spending time manually entering repetitive information into the EHR, the nurse could review, edit, and approve the note, allowing more time for direct patient care.
In a long-term care facility, AI could assist with documenting resident assessments, care plan updates, fall-risk evaluations, and family communications. Because long-term care nurses often manage large numbers of residents, reducing documentation time could significantly improve workflow efficiency.
For a nurse practitioner (NP), ambient AI could document patient encounters, summarize medical histories, organize assessment findings, and generate draft SOAP notes.3
The NP would still verify accuracy and clinical appropriateness, but the technology could reduce time spent charting after clinic hours. Several large health systems have already reported successful implementation of AI scribes, with clinicians noting reduced documentation burden and improved focus during patient interactions.
5. AI can create more realistic scenarios in nursing simulation
Throughout history, nursing has continuously evolved alongside healthcare advancements. Nurses adapted to electronic health records, telehealth, smart pumps, simulation training, and countless other innovations. AI represents another technological evolution, not the elimination of nursing.
One of the current AI applications that nursing students might encounter is its use in nursing simulation for training purposes. Nursing programs often utilize simulation labs with fake treatment rooms and mannequins to practice and implement what they are learning.

AI adoption in these areas of training will likely continue to play a critical role.
1. AI can't diagnose or treat illness or treat patients
Importantly, the AI is not diagnosing anything. Take the sepsis warning in the above example. The AI's role is to alert providers that symptoms could be indicative of developing sepsis. Every core component of patient diagnosis and treatment still needs to be decided by clinicians.
It cannot make treatment decisions independently. Artificial intelligence technology bases its results on amalgamations of information and patterns. Nursing education and nursing experience involves far more than understanding patterns in patient monitoring and clinical decision making.
Instead, nursing AI serves as a clinical decision-support tool that helps clinicians identify concerning trends that might otherwise be missed in a busy healthcare environment.
Nurses remain essential to interpreting the patient's condition, validating the AI system alert, and determining the appropriate course of action.
In this way, AI acts as an additional layer of surveillance that enhances patient safety while supporting, rather than replacing, clinical judgment.
In clinical trials, AI acts as a decision-support and efficiency tool that helps clinicians identify important information, complete documentation more efficiently, and manage complex workflows while maintaining human oversight and accountability.1
2. AI can't provide culturally-sensitive or individual-specific care
Nursing is far more than following protocols or completing tasks.
Nurses continuously assess changing patient conditions, interpret clinical information, prioritize care, and make complex decisions in unpredictable situations. While AI systems can analyze large amounts of data quickly, they lack the human judgment needed to understand the full context of patient care.
For example, a nurse may recognize that a patient’s anxiety, facial expression, or family concerns signal a decline in condition even before objective data changes. Experienced nurses often identify subtle warning signs through intuition and clinical experience that AI systems cannot fully replicate.
The critical thinking nurses do every day also involves ethical reasoning, cultural sensitivity and individualized care planning.
Patients are not simply data points or diagnoses; they are individuals with emotions, fears, values, and personal experiences. Nursing care must adapt to those human factors in ways that technology cannot independently achieve.
3. AI can't empathize with patient suffering
Nurse patient interactions remain one of the most positive aspects of the patient experience in healthcare throughout the industry. We know that the experience and education levels of the nurses in a hospital, for example, have a direct, positive impact on patient outcomes.
The emotional support nurses provide to patients and families can't be replaced. Nurses comfort patients during fear, grief, uncertainty, and pain. They advocate for vulnerable individuals, provide reassurance during difficult diagnoses, and support families during end-of-life care.
AI cannot genuinely empathize with a patient experiencing suffering. Human compassion is central to nursing practice and is something patients consistently value in healthcare experiences.
During some of the most difficult moments in healthcare, patients often remember the nurse who held their hand, listened to their concerns, or provided comfort, motivation and advice. Those deeply-human interactions cannot be replaced by machines or algorithms.
Quality care requires a human touch.
4. AI can't advocate for patients
Another reason AI cannot replace nursing is the essential advocacy role nurses provide. Nurses protect patient safety, speak up about concerns, and ensure patients understand their treatment plans and healthcare choices.
AI systems may identify risks or suggest interventions, but they cannot advocate for a patient’s dignity, preferences, or emotional needs. Nurses often bridge communication gaps between providers, patients, and families while ensuring patients feel heard and respected.
This advocacy is already a huge part of patient care and will likely become even more important as healthcare systems embrace artificial intelligence and automation.
Advocacy requires ethical decision-making and professional accountability. Nurses must consider the emotional, social, and cultural aspects of healthcare decisions in ways that AI cannot independently manage.
5. AI can’t truly prioritize the individual patient
When systems are large, patients can easily become metrics, and those metrics are all too easily categorized into cost and benefit for the larger healthcare system. Any programmable technology will likely have priorities in its functioning that extend beyond any one, individual patient.
Nursing’s strength lies in the balance between science and humanity.
Technology may continue to evolve, but patients will always need compassionate professionals who can think critically, communicate effectively, and provide personalized care. Healthcare systems continue to rely heavily on nurses not only for technical skills but also for patient education, coordination of care, and emotional support.
A foundation of nursing is that each patient should be prioritized and centered. Nurses remind everyone that each patient is a person whose life, health and dignity matter more than any bottom line.
AI will support nurses, not replace them
Rather than replacing nurses, AI will likely become a tool that supports nursing practice.
AI can help reduce administrative burdens, identify patterns in patient data, improve workflow efficiency, and assist with clinical documentation. These advancements may allow nurses to spend more time focused on patient interaction and clinical judgment.
Nurses who understand technology and nursing informatics will become even more valuable because they can help integrate AI into healthcare safely and effectively. Additionally, nurses who can respond to AI prompts or alerts without relying on it too-heavily to impact their clinical judgement may well find their work more essential than ever.
One of the strongest indicators that nursing will remain essential is the continued demand for nurses nationwide. According to a 2026 U.S. News & World Report, nursing remains one of the best and fastest-growing careers in America because of increasing healthcare needs, aging populations, and ongoing workforce shortages.4
As I reflect on the future of nursing, I no longer see AI as a threat to the profession. Instead, I see it as a tool that can enhance nursing practice while reinforcing the importance of the human qualities nurses bring to healthcare every day.
The future of nursing is not about competing with AI but learning how to work alongside it while preserving the humanity at the heart of healthcare.
