Pharmacy Technician

Our Pharmacy Tech program prepares you to work as a certified pharmacy technician in pharmacy settings such as retail pharmacies or clinical pharmacies.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the demand for certified pharmacy technicians is projected to grow 7% from 2023 to 2033.5

Graduates of this program understand the theory of pharmacy practice and are able to perform pharmacy tasks including receiving, interpreting, entering, and filling prescriptions as part of a health care team. Graduates have been trained to use software programs to manage and process medications, and to understand medical terminology, medical law and ethics, patient confidentiality, and pharmacy math within clinical and retail pharmacies. They work well with health system pharmacists, value honesty and integrity, feel compassion for patients, and are able to effectively communicate in a variety of situations.

In addition to meeting all other acceptance requirements such as a high school diploma or equivalent, applicants must successfully pass a background check through Rasmussen University’s chosen third-party vendor. An additional background check may also be required during active enrollment prior to practicum or clinical placement depending on site requirements. Any prospective student must also consider their history, lifestyle, and future actions before enrolling in this program, and carefully consider whether their actions may prevent them from attaining employment in the field they choose to pursue. Additional requirements, such as industry-specific training may be required to obtain employment in this field. Applicants for careers in this field may be subject to pre-employment screenings such as, but not limited to, criminal background checks, and drug/or alcohol testing. Employment decisions, including whether to require background checks and other tests, are made at the discretion of the employer.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board^® is a credentialing organization for pharmacy technicians accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).3 The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board^® oversees pharmacy technician training and ensures the delivery of quality education.
